Opening

The meeting was opened by the President, Clayton Smith (VE3IRR), at 19:30 hours. He welcomed three visitors: Duane Avery (VA3ODD), Robert Boyd (VE3BE) and Graham Collins (VE3GTC).

Secretary’s Report

The Secretary, Glenn MacDonell (VE3XRA), introduced the minutes of the September meeting. Moved by the Secretary that the minutes be approved; seconded by Randy Nordlund (VE3AX). Carried.

Treasurer’s Report

The Treasurer, Andy Hart (VE3NVK) reported that the current bank balance was $483 and as of the August meeting the club had 22 paid up members.

Vice President’s Report

The Vice President, Doug Leach (VE3XK) reported that speakers have been arranged for all meetings through June. The December meeting will include the club’s Annual General Meeting (including elections of President, Secretary and Director for two year terms) and a Christmas party. In January Ralph Cameron will speak on Cold War Radio Communications from the Diefenbunker.

Doug Leach reported that the beacons continued to operate well.

Broadband Hamnet

Clayton Smith reported that the topology has not changed in the last month. Glenn MacDonell reminded members that Rick Bandla had posted a message on the club relector announcing that a group purchase of used Ubiquity Nanostation M2s (for 2.4 GHz band) was being planned. There was no warranty on the devices and the cost would be $25 each + tax + shipping, without the required POE (power supply over ethernet) system.

Possible Future Projects

Graham Collins passed around a QRP Labs Ultimate3S QRSS/WSPR kit, a possible future project being considered by club members. More information on the kit can be found at http://www.qrp-labs.com/ultimate3.html.

  • Rich Ferch (VE3KI) announced that a CCO/DX Day would take place in Ottawa Sat Jan 23. Vlad VE2JM will speak about constructing his contest station, among other speakers.
  • Glenn MacDonell announced that the OARC would operate VE3CWM from the Diefenbunker (Cold War Museum) for the RAC Winter Contest Dec 19.

Dave Conn delivered a presentation on portable antennas showing calculated antenna patterns and gain for many popular portable antennas.
